An Englishwoman’s story of disaster relief - Japan Today

This is a story about people, resilience, their communities and how they rebuilt their lives one step at a time. "One Month in Tohoku" is written from the heart and although it's heartbreaking, it isn't just sad. There's lots of moments that made me burst out laughing.  https://japantoday.com/category/features/lifestyle/an-english-woman's-story-of-disaster-relief? — Best regards Seetha Ram

Revenge bedtime procrastination

Revenge bedtime procrastination may be a newer term, but the type of sleep schedule it describes is not, said Dr. Rajkumar Dasgupta, assistant professor of clinical medicine at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles. "Revenge bedtime procrastination is just a cry from overworked people, and they're actually trying to put off bedtime just a little bit so they can reclaim something for themselves," Dasgupta said. https://edition.cnn.com/2021/02/15/health/revenge-bedtime-procrastination-wellness/index.html?utm_source=pocket-newtab-intl-en — Best Regards Seetha Ram

The unexpected ingredients that improve solar cells

A number of kitchen-cupboard ingredients have found unlikely employment in making solar panels more efficient. Solar cell scientist Jon Major explains why. Think of solar cells like cake. To find out what will happen when you add a novel ingredient, it's far more reliable to bake it and then sample the final concoction https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20210211-rewilding-can-ireland-regrow-its-wilderness

Awe is a powerful emotion typically experienced in the presence of something great or vast. Researchers refer to it as an 'epistemic' emotion because the kinds of objects that induce awe are rich in information: that is, awe often challenges a person's existing understanding of things and motivates a search for explanations, both scientific and religious . Awe is associated with a dropping of the jaw and an open, gaping mouth. When we experience awe, we're stunned by something, enraptured by it. Such experiences are typically positive, and people typically want them to continue. https://psyche.co/ideas/why-awesome-natural-beauty-drops-the-jaw-and-lifts-the-spirit   —

10 Years After Christchurch Quake, a Hush Where 8,000 Homes Once Stood - The New York Times

Years of local consultation has been necessary to determine what should happen to the land, but native tree planting should begin soon, she said. A native forest would be "a respectful way to acknowledge people who have given up sometimes their lifelong home," she added. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/21/world/australia/christchurch-new-zealand-quake-red-zone.html — Best regards Seetha Ram

Bill Gates has a plan to save the world

Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, has his feet firmly planted on the ground. He is just as concerned about global warming as are those thrillionaires, but in his view there is only one planet that matters. His new book, "How to Avoid a Climate Disaster", is devoted to reconciling the legitimate aspirations of billions of people for economic advancement with the environmental harm that results. If humanity is to win the great race between development and degradation, he writes, green innovation must accelerate. https://www.economist.com/books-and-arts/2021/02/15/bill-gates-has-a-plan-to-save-the-world — Best regards Seetha Ram

The pandemic made the world realise the importance of human contact

The sense of touch is easily overlooked. Its flashier cousins, vision and hearing, have entire art forms dedicated to them while chefs and perfumers serve our taste buds and nostrils. Scientists neglect it. For every research paper on touch, there are 100 on sight. https://www.economist.com/international/2021/02/20/the-pandemic-made-the-world-realise-the-importance-of-human-contact — Best regards Seetha Ram

Wonderful story

The 5 Keys to Falling Asleep On Time Every Night

Sleep is crucial. Follow these steps to get the rest your body will thank you for. The best book I've read on sleep is Matthew Walker's Why We Sleep . In it, he explains the importance of getting good sleep as well  https://getpocket.com/explore/item/the-5-keys-to-falling-asleep-on-time-every-night?utm_source=pocket-newtab-intl-en — Best Regards Seetha Ram

The Science Behind Miracles

The mind has a propensity to make predictions, and then ensure those predictions come to pass through internal "pharmacies" that, when lumped together, are also called placebo effects.  https://getpocket.com/explore/item/the-science-behind-miracles?utm_source=pocket-newtab-intl-en   — Best Regards Seetha Ram

With software hiring big, students opt for subjects relevant to it' -= Education for jobs or for the country ?

Education for jobs or for the country ? It is a matter for society to address — after all such imbalances are commonplace in society — agriculture vs industry being the one that comes to mind first. It must also be said that with the software industry absorbing such large numbers, and the industry also being the lead aspiration of the students, the curricula as well as the interest of the students veer towards subjects relevant to the software industry and away from core subjects in the various disciplines. This leads to a situation where even those who take up employment in their respective core disciplines are found wanting in their level of understanding of their fields. These structural issues are difficult to address. https://bloncampus.thehindubusinessline.com/engineering/with-software-hiring-big-students-opt-for-subjects-relevant-to-it/article33750336.ece

How many steps a day ?

Well written.  If you want to increase how many steps you get daily, or simply want to move more, one easy way to do that is to increase your current step count by about 2,000 steps a day.  https://theconversation.com/do-we-really-need-to-walk-10-000-steps-a-day-153765?utm_source=pocket-newtab-intl-en
