The Future of Work Is a 60-Year Career

Do you know this person? Laura Carstensen, the director of the Stanford Center on Longevity ? Interesting paper with new ideas. Carstensen proposes allowing workers to scale their hours up or down throughout their careers, based on their responsibilities outside of paid work. She imagines two parents being able to temporarily reduce their full-time jobs to 20 hours a week when caring for their young children, and then ratcheting their hours back up later on. Under this model, people would work the same amount overall as they do now, but make up for periods of reduced hours with periods of longer hours and/or by spreading work out over more years of their (longer) lives. https://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2021/12/future-work-shorter-hours-longer-careers/621003/?utm_source=pocket-newtab-intl-en

THE ALCHEMY OF ANGST (The Japan Times), 28-Dec-2021

Little by little, we have forgotten how to say, "I don't know." If we are unfamiliar with an issue, we can easily Google it, and in the next five to 10 minutes we will be able to come up with something to say about it. And if we take a few more minutes, we can even convince ourselves that we are experts — even though those snippets of information do not amount to knowledge. Why technology often fails to replicate the “natural services” of ecosystems

When we chlorinate water, or use other similar biocides, we create an environment toxic to many microbes (including many fecal-oral parasites). This has saved many millions of lives. However, this same intervention has also favored the persistence of another kind of parasite, nontuberculous mycobacteria. Nontuberculous mycobacteria turn out to be relatively resistant to chlorine. As a result, chlorination  creates  conditions  in  which nontuberculous mycobacteria thrive.  https://bigthink.com/life/natural-history-of-the-future/
