Over the 1945-1975 period, the share of Japanese students graduating from ninth grade and continuing their education soared to 92% from 43%, mirroring the country's broader economic reemergence.
Japan invested heavily in education then. As the current president of the Group of Seven, it can inspire a new surge of investment in education to help counter worsening threats to peace and stability. When it was president of the group in 2008, Japan was instrumental in steering members, then including Russia, to strongly prioritize education at the leaders' summit held in the northern town of Toyako.
