Think about babies for a minute. When they cry, sometimes the parents don't know why. So they offer the baby some food.
What does the baby learn? That if they're in distress, they should eat! Dr. Warrier says that we carry this early lesson into adulthood.
A quick science lesson:
Lakshmi, we have two nervous systems: the sympathetic nervous system that gets triggered when we are under stress (its job is to prepare us for a crisis) and the parasympathetic nervous system that calms us down.

Food activates the parasympathetic nervous system. Say you have a looming deadline or important presentation. Naturally, you are under stress. Your body craves balance. So you instinctively turn to your comfort food (Biryani? Rasam rice? Rajma-chawal?) and like magic, it calms you down!
The problem occurs when we turn too much to food without addressing the fundamental source of the stress. i.e. instead of preparing for the exam or doing the work, we binge-eat.

Why do teenagers develop eating disorders? Although there are genetic and environmental factors, Dr. Warrier says that a common reason could be that the young person would have experienced a highly stressful period or incident when they had zero control.
This loss of control triggers the sympathetic nervous system (high stress) and to balance it, they turn to food. They feel that eating or not eating food is the only aspect they can control—so in their life, food becomes a symbol for control.
Think of freedom fighters who used to go on hunger strikes. When they had no other way to register protest, they wielded food as a weapon. Eating disorders are something similar but done unconsciously and uncontrollably.
