The changing picture of disease: living longer may not mean living healthier

I saw this article when using the Financial Times app and thought you might be interested: The contrast underscores how living longer does not necessarily mean living healthier — and why the great task now is to improve people's chances of doing both. Remittances Increase GDP with Potential Differential Impacts Across Countries

On average, we find that a 10% increase in remittance is associated with a 0.66% permanent increase in GDP. It is important to contextualize this average result: Given the  evidence  of negative spillover effects of other non-market transfers such as social insurance programs and  the immense benefits  of remittances in alleviating poverty, this relatively benign aggregate impact of remittance on output we find is a desirable outcome. Importantly, our finding highlights that remittances are not simply outgrowing foreign aid in terms of size, but they may be relatively less harmful to growth, and perhaps, a useful driver of long-term output compared to foreign aid. https://blogs.worldbank.org/en/peoplemove/remittances-increase-gdp-potential-differential-impacts-across-countries Best Regards Seetha Ram

Attracting the next generation of inheritors and self-made wealthy

I saw this article when using the Financial Times app and thought you might be interested: Private banks and wealth managers are also upping their digital game because clients expect easy online access to their money and to tailored content. But, in the end, there is no substitute for a live human being. "In the foreseeable future, I don't think there's a world where people who have money don't want a human on the other end, because at the end of the day, it's not just about risk adjusted returns," says Morgan Stanley's Finn. "It's deeply personal, deeply emotional." Financial Times, Attracting the next generation of inheritors and self-made wealthy -- Brooke Masters -- Read the full article at: https://on.ft.com/3V6ql29

God™: an ageing product outperforms expectations

God™: an ageing product outperforms expectations https://www.economist.com/culture/2024/05/14/god-an-ageing-product-outperforms-expectations from The Economist the Catholic church, like McDonald's, offers a striking uniformity of service, whether you are in the Vatican or Venezuela. They have the resources to compete for customers in ways that smaller, less well-financed, local gods cannot. Baal, it seems, died out not because—as the Bible has it—he was a false god but because his franchise faile

But as these students get older, the role of touch diminishes – to the students' detriment. Today's reading assignments are heavily digital, and use of computer keyboards for writing shows no sign of abating, especially given the lure of AI tools for editing and composing. https://japantoday.com/category/features/opinions/the-power-of-touch-is-vital-for-both-reading-and-writing? Food delivery services facing hard times in post-pandemic environment - Japan Today

Also with the declining youth demographic relative to the overall population, it's become more difficult for businesses to secure gig workers (i.e., on-call or temporary workers)," Watanabe said. "As long as there are a certain number of people who for whatever reason are unable to go out from their homes, I can't see food delivery services completely drying up. But the delivery service fees the restaurants have to absorb can be heavy, and so what we are seeing now is a weeding-out among the major players, which has already begun." https://japantoday.com/category/features/kuchikomi/food-delivery-services-facing-hard-times-in-post-pandemic-environment?
